What:
The Ring Lamp is a custom 3D-printed lighting system designed to fit atop a 150mm cylindrical glass vase. It’s ideal for small aquascapes or terrariums, offering functional lighting without obstructing access to the inside of the vase.
Why:
Overhead lights often block access to small vases or jars, making it difficult to tend to plants or adjust displays. This is solved by repurposing a common, cheap, selfie ring light. This design is perfect for growing and observing aquatic or terrestrial plants like Hygrophila and mosses by providing even soft lighting around the rim of the vase, with easily controlled intensity and color temperature.
How:
The system is made from:
3D-printed ring shade and bracket that rests securely on the vase rim.
3D-printed diffuser - softens the LED lights and shields it from moisture.
rotating base allowing the vase to be easily turned for different viewing angles.
Off-the-shelf components including a USB-powered LED ring and common cylindrical vase.
Highlights:
The weight and position of the ring shade and power cable help it stay balanced as the vase is rotated. The open ring structure provides ample airflow, helps maintain humidity levels, and protects the internal setup. The rotating base allows for freedom of movement to manipulate the vase for better viewing. Parts are readily available which make them easy to replicate, customize, and repair.
